Diamond Origin: Geology, Geography and Provenance
Natural diamonds form deep within the Earth under high pressure and temperature, then reach the surface through volcanic rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite. Geological origin is different from geographic provenance. A laboratory can identify a diamond and sometimes document colour origin or, through specialised controlled programmes, support mine-origin conclusions, but a standard grading report does not usually prove where a polished diamond was mined. Historic source regions include India and Brazil; major modern production has also come from southern Africa, Russia, Canada and Australia. For collectors and private buyers, origin matters only when the chain of evidence is credible. A compelling story should be supported by records, not inferred from colour, cut or seller tradition.
How Natural Diamonds Form
Most natural diamonds crystallised in the mantle at depths of roughly 140 kilometres or more, often billions of years ago.
Volcanic eruptions later transported diamond-bearing material toward the surface.
Mining recovers diamonds from primary volcanic deposits or secondary alluvial deposits where erosion moved crystals into rivers and sediments.
Historic and Modern Source Regions
India supplied many famous historic diamonds before major discoveries in Brazil and southern Africa changed the trade.
Modern production has included Botswana, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Canada, Russia and Australia, among other countries.
Production history does not mean the geographic origin of an individual polished stone can be guessed reliably.
Geographic Origin Versus Colour Origin
Colour origin asks whether a diamond’s colour is natural or treated. Geographic origin asks where the diamond was mined.
These are separate questions. A standard coloured-diamond report may state natural colour without identifying a mine.
Special origin services generally require documented handling from rough through polishing; they cannot usually reconstruct mine origin from an undocumented polished stone alone.
Provenance and Chain of Custody
Provenance describes the documented history of ownership, custody and sometimes source.
Useful evidence can include mine records, sealed rough programmes, invoices, auction catalogues, royal inventories and collection archives.
Repeated stories without documentary continuity should be treated as tradition rather than verified fact.
Why Origin Matters to Collectors
Documented origin can add historical, cultural or collection significance.
It may also support responsible-sourcing review, although no single document provides a complete ethical guarantee.
Origin should not be used to promise future appreciation.
